About a year ago I started packing my things in Zanzibar. The move across continents was rather adventurous and involved quite a few ships and boats.

Step I: get the things off the island and on to mainland Dar es Salaam. For this, everything had to be loaded on to a truck which then went overnight (with the driver in the car) on the Sealink Ferry to Dar es Salaam:

Lowering a table from my balcony. It simply would not fit through any of the main doors. How did we ever manage to get it inside?

I then went on the morning ferry to get the truck with my things out of the port and through customs in Dar es Salaam. I expected it to be difficult … but instead I had only pleasant experiences with the custom officials. They were much more interested to know why I was leaving Tanzania and what I thought of Tanzanian men than they were in taxing my used furniture. 🙂
